The One Thing Needed

In our modern society it seems like virtually every month there is some new gadget being marketed to make our lives simpler. An even casual glance around our homes will reveal that they are filled with more appliances that are placed within our homes with the goal of making make things more convenient and the household chores easier. Things have certainly changed from the time that any of us was a child. There were no microwave ovens, ice making refrigerators, and many of the other modern appliances found in today’s home. How did we ever survive without them? However, in spite of all these changes that supposedly add to the convenience of the home, women today are probably busier than at any other point in history.

Expectations for women have changed as well. Today, she is expected to not only cook the bacon, she has to help bring it home as well. Even though she may work 40 hours plus, many times she is still expected to be the main housekeeper. She is often expected to keep the house, cook the meals, wash the clothes, and take care of the children. Their day is often from sunup to sundown. The result is that today’s women have no easy task as they juggle their varied tasks and responsibilities.

Another change we have seen in recent years is the “super mom”. This is the woman that attempts to have it all, a good education, a great career, and be a great mother as well. Many women are finding that this is not that easy. With all that is expected of them, many women try to cut corners in order to make time for a busy day.

The problem with this is that one aspect that often gets cut or overlooked is that of a growing love relationship with Abba Father. Many women, (and men as well) fail to make time for this special relationship opportunity. Whenever we focus primarily on the material, and neglect this one unfailing relationship, we will not be fulfilled and happy.

In Luke 10 is recorded the time that Jesus went to the home of his dear friends Martha and Mary. Martha was busy and completely focused on trying to get all the preparations done to the point that she was distracted from the thought that Jesus was there. Mary on the other hand was focused on sitting at the Lord’s feet and listening to Him. When Martha complained in verse 41 & 42 Jesus responded to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Someone once said, “It’s the woman that sets the mood for the home.” Today’s version of that is “If momma’s not happy, nobody’s gonna be happy.” Are you happy? Have you neglected the “one thing” that is needed? Today’s mothers still have the greatest opportunity to model what it means to live loved but only if they can stay focused on developing the “one thing” that is needed.

Jill Churchill in her book “Grime And Punishment” comments, “There’s no way to be a perfect mother.... and a million ways to be a good one.” The only way to ever possibly be a perfect mom or just a good one is when your love relationship with Father gets top priority and is never neglected.
